Brentford lift Professional Development League trophy, as Swansea clinch point at the Gtech Community Stadium
The Gtech Community Stadium was all set to host its second instalment of football this weekend, as Brentford U21s took on Swansea City U21s in the Professional Development League.
Last time out, the Bees’ seven-game winning run was halted by Peterborough U21s at the Weston Homes Stadium. Despite leading from the 11th minute thanks to 17-year-old Beau Redknapp opening the scoring, they were denied victory by an injury-time equaliser from the Posh.
As for the visitors, the Swans came into the encounter off the back of a narrow 1–0 victory in the North East over Fleetwood. Morgan Bates grabbed the only goal of the game, taking his tally to 18 for the Professional Development League campaign.
When the two sides faced off back in December, Brentford ran out victorious courtesy of a strong second-half performance that saw Luka Bentt and Chanse Headman get on the scoresheet, while the Swans ended the game with ten men. With both sides having confirmed their playoff status, they were looking to round off the league phase in convincing fashion by adding three points to their tally. As for the hosts, just a single point was required to see them lift the title in front of their supporters in West London.
MATCH REPORT:
There were only four minutes on the clock when the deadlock was broken in the capital from the first set piece of the game. Riley Owen drove a low corner into a sea of shirts, which, to Swansea’s dismay, fell kindly to the feet of Ethan Laidlaw. He drilled the ball past Joseph Collins to give the Bees an early lead, notching his 14th goal of the season. 4′ 1–0
However, it took just another four minutes for the visitors to draw level. Morgan Bates was found in space with a clear pathway to goal, and the 19-year-old produced a cool, composed finish to slot past Julian Eyestone and restore parity. Both sides’ respective top scorers in this competition were on the scoresheet following a frantic opening ten minutes. 8′ 1–1
Clear-cut chances were few and far between from this point onwards. Romelle Donovan, who has featured four times for Brentford’s first team this season, twisted and turned away from Caio Ifans, but his effort was dragged wide of the near post. Michel Boni also managed an effort from the edge of the area, but it fell comfortably into the grasp of Joseph Collins.
Both sides looked to close out the half on the front foot. The Swans’ best chance came when Caio Ifans set up Yori Griffith on the edge of the penalty area; however, his effort curled inches over the bar. In first-half added time, Romelle Donovan was found in space at the back post, but Ifans got his body in the way and diverted the effort for a corner. After a fast-paced opening ten minutes, neither side could capitalise further, and the score remained level heading into the break.
Half Time: Brentford U21s 1–1 Swansea City U21s
Just like the first half, there was little wait for goalmouth action. Joshua Pescatore’s in-swinging corner met the head of the high-rising Morgan Bates, who guided his header into the far corner past Julian Eyestone to put the Welsh side ahead for the first time. This marked Bates’ 20th goal of the campaign and his third in as many matches. 47′ 1–2
Moments later, Ollie Shields’ trickery on the edge of the box won the Bees a free kick around 20 yards from goal. Romelle Donovan stepped up and drilled a low strike emphatically past Joseph Collins, replicating Swansea’s quick response from earlier in the match. 51′ 2–2
On the hour mark, Brentford had a golden chance to regain the lead. Romelle Donovan threatened the Swans’ backline again and created an opening; his effort struck Iestyn Jones but continued goalwards. Collins reacted well to prevent the danger, and Ethan Laidlaw was unable to capitalise on the loose ball from close range.
Brentford maintained the pressure and looked the more likely to score. Josh Stephenson sent Donovan on another driving run through the middle, and he slipped the ball through to Michel Boni, who could only fire into the side netting. Laidlaw and Owen also had chances, but their efforts were curled wide and blocked respectively. Stephenson then tried his luck from distance, his shot drifting inches wide of the bottom-right corner.
Stephenson later had Brentford’s best chance of the second half. Donovan delivered an inch-perfect free kick that found the unmarked centre-half at the back post, but his close-range header was guided wide as the score remained level at two apiece. This proved to be Donovan’s final involvement, as he was replaced by Andre Gray.
The hosts continued to relentlessly test the Swansea backline. Conor McManus played a clever pass into Laidlaw, who fired a dangerous effort goalwards, only for Iestyn Jones to slide in and block once again.
The Bees edged closer as time went on. Substitute Andre Gray struck fiercely from the edge of the area, only to see his effort crash off the upright. Minutes later, Ollie Shields showed great skill down the right and presented Laidlaw with a golden opportunity. Unmarked at the back post and with Collins stranded, the Scotsman failed to make clean contact, skewing his effort wide.
As the game moved into added time, Ollie Shields still had energy to spare. His cross found an unmarked Caelan Avenell, but his shot lacked power and was easily gathered by Collins. Despite an avalanche of chances, the Swans held on for a point ahead of their trip to Sheffield United on Tuesday afternoon.
Brentford, however, will not be too disheartened, as they were crowned winners of the Professional Development League 2025/26 in front of their supporters at the Gtech Community Stadium.

Post Match :
Michel Boni says he is looking forward to the prospect of playing Category One academies in the playoff stage of the competition. “We have shown we can beat category one teams already in the Premier League Cup this year, I think it’s obviously going to be a challenge but we have got the group of players to do it.”
The Benin international also touched on how the league can be seen as a confidence booster going into these games. “We’ve just won the league so that will give us a load of confidence. It doesn’t matter if its cat three, cat one or cat two opposition, we still have a job to do and we will see what we can do.”
Bees manager, Sam Saunders mentioned the high amount of players involved with his side that have gone on to make appearances and squad involvements at in the Premier League. “It’s amazing to see them get an opportunity at this football club to better their career with the first team, and success at this level looks like many different things it could be playing with our first team or going out and getting experience in the football league.”
